Write-Ins
Write-Ins are live, small-group sessions that help you grow as a writer and storyteller—no experience necessary.
Here’s How It Works
The workshop facilitator offers a series of prompts and encourages participants to write whatever they want in response. The idea is to experiment and have fun. After each prompt, we’ll have 5 to 15 minutes to write.
When the time is up, we have the option to share what we've created. There's no expectation of polished work.
We use the Amherst Writers & Artists method, which means that feedback focuses only on what is strong and memorable. There is no critique, no judgment, no teaching, no hierarchy. The facilitator, trained in the AWA method, writes and shares her work as well.
Writing without time to edit or censor ourselves helps us tap into the unique, authentic voice that everyone has, but which often gets muted through criticism and self-doubt. This creates a safe space where participants can experiment, take risks, and develop as writers.
Expect a warm, welcoming environment. Expect laughter. Most of all, expect to surprise yourself!
May Write-In: Thresholds

"I have never considered myself a creative writer, so I was a bit self-conscious about my ability to create interesting and engaging pieces. But Barbara's encouragement gave me a confidence boost, and the spirited and thought-provoking discussions from my fellow workshop attendees motivated me to be more diligent about nurturing my creative juices! I highly recommend Barbara's workshop to anyone looking to enhance their writing or simply enjoy a safe space free of judgment for authentic creative expression."

"I loved every minute of the workshop with Barbara — my only regret is the hour flew by too quickly! Barbara moderated it deftly and made it a safe and creative space for strangers to connect, push each other, and grow together as writers. I’m now hooked on AWA workshops and look forward to joining more in the future.”
